Semi-trailer axle load and legal payload: what buyers must confirm
Technical carrying capacity is not the same as legal payload. Check tare, axle distribution, tractor combination and destination rules.
A trailer can be structurally capable of carrying a weight that is not legally permitted on the buyer’s route. Final payload depends on the complete tractor-trailer combination and local enforcement.
Separate technical capacity from legal payload
Start with the trailer tare and the manufacturer ratings, then test the complete combination against destination and transit rules.
- Trailer tare weight
- Axle, tyre and suspension ratings
- Gross vehicle and combination limits
- Country-specific axle group limits
Check load distribution
Cargo position changes kingpin load and axle group load even when total cargo weight stays the same.
- Kingpin position and fifth-wheel location
- Axle spacing and axle group
- Concentrated versus distributed cargo
- Container position and cargo centre of gravity
Put assumptions in writing
A useful quotation states the cargo, route and legal assumptions instead of advertising one universal payload number.
- Exact cargo and density
- Registration and operating countries
- Tractor model and fifth-wheel height
- Buyer confirmation of local road limits
